Originally published in 1903, this is an important book in the history of Puerto Rican literature, being one of the first to be written by a woman. Ana Roque was quite a woman, too: A suffragette and women's right activist, born in 1853. This novel is also one of the first to be set in an urban setting rather than rural, and uses a letter writing device to advance the story. A classic.
