This rendition of Saint Anne shows her reading to the Virgin Mary, when Mary was a child.

Anne and her husband were not able to conceive a child. When they were visited by an angel, Anne promised to give her child to the service of God in exchange for motherhood. Mary, born via Immaculate Conception, was educated by her mother reading her scripture. At the age of 3 Anne relinquished her to the temple according to her promise.

The larger figure in this carving wears the traditional red robes and head covering associated with St. Anne. The small figure is the Virgin as a girl.

Saint Anne is the patron saint of Adjuntas, PR.

This carving is by Jose Orta, of the famous Orta family of saints carvers.  It measures about 8 1/2" high.
